Zalando Outlets on growth course: New stores to open in Frankfurt and Bielefeld this summer

Berlin, May 10, 2023 // Zalando, a leading online platform for fashion and lifestyle in Europe, will open two new Outlets in summer 2023. In addition to another store in Frankfurt, there will be a Zalando Outlet in Bielefeld for the first time. This will create even more opportunities for fashion fans to find their favorite brands at low prices.

Frankfurt will take the lead: In the first week of August, a new Zalando Outlet will open in one of Germany's most popular shopping streets, the Zeil. The new store (Zeil 119) will offer an extensive range of around 2,000 brands on four floors with around 1,700 square meters of sales space. The existing store (Leipziger Str. 41-43) will initially remain open for customers from Frankfurt and the surrounding area. At the end of August, the fourth outlet in North Rhine-Westphalia will open in the heart of Bielefeld (Bahnhofstraße 33). In the future, bargain hunters will find around 15,000 items from various brands on an area of around 1,500 sqm.

Dorothee, what role do the outlets play at Zalando?

The Zalando Outlets have been around now for more than ten years. Started as a pilot project, they now strategically complement Zalando's offer. Among other things, we sell goods in the outlets that we can no longer offer in the fashion store - for example, single sizes, returns, or items from the previous season.

Will there be more outlets in Germany in the near future and are there also plans for abroad?

We are often asked this question, often in connection with concrete ideas and even real estate offers. Of course, we are pleased about the great interest and I don't want to rule anything out, because Zalando is a European company and is now active in 25 markets. But for now we fully focus on new openings in Bielefeld and Frankfurt.

What do the coming months look like?

We start recruiting the future team. Our goal, of course, is to find great colleagues who fit in with Zalando. Parallel to the renovation work, the training phase begins, during which the new employees get to know each other and our processes. Fortunately, we always have a very large crowd at the opening - the first real baptism of fire for the new team.

Thirteen cities throughout Germany

Unlike what is often seen in outlets, Zalando outlet stores are inspiringly furnished and centrally located. In recent years, Zalando Outlets have increasingly moved into highly frequented city center locations, including Germany's best-known shopping miles such as Düsseldorf's Königsallee, Cologne's Schildergasse, and Berlin's Tauentzienstrasse. From summer 2023, Zalando will thus be represented with outlet stores in a total of 13 German cities.

New selection of branded goods every day

Customers can find a daily changing selection of designer and brand products in the Zalando Outlets, which are reduced by up to 70% compared to the original price. Customers can save even more with the Outlet Card, which has already been issued more than one million times since its introduction in 2014. The outlet assortment includes clothing, shoes, accessories, and selected beauty and homeware products that were previously offered in the Zalando fashion store or the shopping club "Lounge by Zalando". This means that items that for example are now only available in individual sizes and are therefore difficult to offer online, are given another chance to become someone's favorite item - including many returned and refurbished items.

Pre-owned: second-hand to touch

Last year, the outlets' assortment was supplemented by the pre-owned category, i.e. as-new, used clothing. Since then, the offer has been very well received, especially in the Zalando outlets in Frankfurt, Leipzig and Hanover. A large proportion of customers are particularly pleased with the opportunity to try on second-hand clothing on site and check its quality.
