Zalando Selects Kuehne + Nagel to Build and Operate Inbound Distribution Center in Halle an der Saale in Germany
- 35,000 sqm inbound distribution center to open fall 2019
- Will process up to 100 million items per year once fully ramped up
- 350 jobs to be created in the mid-term
BERLIN/HAMBURG, DECEMBER 18, 2018 - Zalando, Europe's leading online platform for fashion and lifestyle has selected Kuehne + Nagel to build and run a Zalando inbound distribution center in Halle an der Saale, Germany.
The logistics center, measuring 35,000 sqm, will start operations in fall 2019. When fully operational, it is planned to process up to 100 million items per year. The new warehouse will efficiently distribute goods to Zalando’s fulfillment centers, thus contributing to increased availability of inventory within the network. This will help to further reduce the need for shipments between fulfillment centers and result in better delivery times for Zalando customers. Additionally the inbound distribution center will help Zalando to increase the turnover of stock in the Zalando fulfillment centers.
The factors that determined the choice of Halle an der Saale as a location have been high employment potential, good geographical location and infrastructure. The new center will be located in the industrial area Star Park Halle which has an excellent transport infrastructure with a nearby connection to the A14 and A9 motorway. Kuehne + Nagel will oversee the operation of the center including the hiring process of about 350 positions that will be created in the mid-term, over 120 employees during the launch phase.
“The advantage of the new inbound distribution center is that we can quickly extract even small quantities to stock up our fulfillment centers based on local demands.. Even more important, this investment will help to increase redundancy of our assortment across our network and getting relevant assortment closer to our customers. Ultimately our customers will benefit from receiving their orders faster.” - says Dr. Jan Bartels, Vice President Customer Fulfillment & Logistics at Zalando.
“Our logistics network keeps on growing to continuously improve the service we provide to our customers. The new inbound distribution center will make replenishing products into such a complex network easier and more cost-efficient”. - says Dr. Andreas Reichhart, Vice President Retail Operations at Zalando.
“E-Commerce is one of the most important growth drivers for Kuehne + Nagel. We are therefore extremely honored that Zalando selected us to manage this new facility. Our ambition is to support Zalando in further improving their supply chain by managing the new inbound distribution center.” - says Matthias Weiner, Managing Director, Contract Logistics at Kuehne + Nagel Germany.
