The spaces that made us: a love letter to queer spaces

This Pride, Zalando celebrates the cultural anchors that offer the safety to be seen, the room to grow and the freedom to live authentically

Safe spaces are rarely just about four walls and a roof. For the LGBTQIA+ community, they are the heartbeat of identity – the cultural anchors where the air feels lighter and the world feels kinder. They are the places where you find your chosen family, your first kiss or simply the quiet courage to be exactly who you are.

To honour these vital sanctuaries, Zalando is launching a new episodic series of poetic love letters celebrating queer spaces across Europe. At a time when many of these essential venues are facing closure because of a lack of systemic support, we are handing the mic to the artists who know their value best.

“Fashion is at its best when it allows us to show the world who we are, but true authenticity can only flourish when we feel safe and seen”, says Sara Spännar, VP Brand & Creative at Zalando. “This year, we wanted to move beyond the surface and celebrate the physical and emotional anchors that allow the community to simply be. They’re places that give people the freedom to explore and build their style confidence. By sharing these stories, we’re standing up for the future of the spaces that allow everyone to find their truth”.

A journey from dreaming to becoming

Crafted in collaboration with director Matt Lambert, the campaign is a raw, intimate exploration of how a safe environment can shift the energy within a person. Told through the voices of actor Kizzy Edgell, performer Tom Rasmussen and DJ and producer Emerald Rose Lewis, the five films trace a chronological journey of discovery.

The narrative begins with the quiet ache of “Dreaming of space”, as Kizzy watches an icon from afar, before moving into the electric thrill of finding space within a community that feels like home. From there, the chapters explore what it means to have the space to be and the space to become, culminating in a final realisation: a “Space that stays with you” – the understanding that the freedom found inside those walls is something you carry with you out into the daylight.

Style as a language of truth

In these films, the role of fashion is subtle yet profound. Rather than being about trends, it focuses on the creative freedom that safe spaces provide. When the pressure to conform is removed, we are free to experiment with our visual identity. The wardrobe becomes a natural extension of their journeys. It shows that style confidence naturally grows when we feel safe to express who we are.

Taking a stand

Beyond the screen, we’re turning words into action. On social media, we’re kicking things off with a series of candid, genuine interviews. Kizzy, Tom and Emerald sit down to chat openly about queerness and what these spaces mean to them.

We’re also sharing creator-led city guides to help our community navigate and support local queer landscapes. Finally, we’re backing this up with local initiatives and donations to two Berlin-based LGBTQIA+ organisations keeping these spaces alive.

And, of course, our own community will be out in force. For several years in a row, the Zalando truck will join the Christopher Street Day parade in Berlin. This year, our message is clear: “Taking a stand is hot”. Because protecting the spaces that hold us isn’t just a choice. It’s a necessity.
