Customers are increasingly shopping based on their values, but struggle to find the right information to help them to make more sustainable choices. Nine out of ten Generation Z customers believe companies have a responsibility to address environmental and social issues, and one in four Zalando customers actively consider sustainability when making a purchasing decision. We offer our customers more than 80,000 more sustainable products, and already 50% of customers are buying at least one of these. Our target is to generate 25% of GMV with the sale of these products, and we already reached 16% in 2020.

We aim to provide our customers with reliable information on the sustainability of the products they buy. For easy customer discovery and identification, we provide a sustainability flag on our products and navigational shortcuts in our Fashion Store. The highlighted products sustainability benefit is also explained on the product detail page.
The criteria we use for products to carry the sustainability flag cover a range of environmental, social, and animal welfare topics and are aligned with industry best practice, including third-party standards and data from the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg Materials Sustainability Index (MSI). We evaluate and raise our minimum requirements on a yearly basis to drive positive change in the industry and scale innovation.
