Comfy Bums and Comfy Returns

The Netherlands has the highest density of bikes in the entire world. Across the country there are more than 22 million bikes. And this is not counting the bikes that are dumped in the canals of Amsterdam every year, which varies between 12,000 and 15,000.With a population of approximately 17 million this accounts for roughly 1.3 bikes per person.

But enough numbers for now. In a country with so many bikes and consequently bike riders, the Dutch local marketing team at Zalando developed a campaign to approach our biking customers and inform them on our new return service ‘Zalando haalt op’. Because next to launching international campaigns for all our customers across all markets, Zalando strongly believes in local activities specifically targeted at local needs and customs.

Therefore, in the cities of Rotterdam, Leiden, Eindhoven, Haarlem, The Hague and Groningen thousands of little cushions featuring our new service were distributed and placed on the racks of thousands of bikes.

Sounds nice, but why would one put a little cushion on a bike’s rack? Though at first glance a bike might seem to be a one person vehicle, in the Netherlands a lot of people tend to ride in pairs. With one person actually driving and the other sitting on the rack, both legs on side, holding on to the person driving. Of course this can become pretty uncomfortable. Here is where the cushion comes in. And yes, it is probably worth while mentioning that you should not try this unless you grow up doing this since you were a kid.

Just like the cushions are making rack rides more comfortable, the return service ‘Zalando haalt op’ is smoothening the return process. With this service, which was first piloted in Amsterdam and Rotterdam and is now being tested across the entire country, Zalando customers can schedule a time and place for their returns to be picked. A courier comes by and and picks up your return at home, at work or wherever you are.

And indeed, in case you were wondering some of the returns are picked up by couriers, on bikes.
