How does Zalando handle the personal data of its users?
Data protection is very important to us, so that when we collect, process or use personal data we adhere strictly to the statutory provisions of the German Data Protection Act, the German Telemedia Act and the corresponding EU directives. We collect, store and process the data of our customers for the entire process of handling their purchase, including any subsequent guarantees, for the services that we offer, for technical administration, and for our own marketing purposes.
Personal data is passed on to third parties - or otherwise transmitted - only if it is necessary to do so for billing purposes or to implement a contract, or if the customer has given us their permission to do so beforehand. As part of the order handling process, for example, the corresponding service providers (e.g. carriers, logisticians or banks) receive the necessary data to handle and manage orders. The data passed on may be used by our service providers only for the purpose of fulfilling their particular task. The service providers entrusted with our business are not permitted to, and do not, use the information for any other purposes.
How does Zalando ensure data security?
The personal data relating to our customers is always transmitted in encrypted form. This applies both to orders and customer logins. In this respect we use the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) coding system. In order to ensure that we are further protected against external attacks, we make use of special security technologies which constantly monitor our system and identify and indicate any suspicious features immediately. Whilst we cannot guarantee absolute protection, we do everything to minimize the risk of unauthorized access to our customers' data.
When is personal data deleted?
Personal data is deleted when our customers have asked for it to be deleted and to the extent that doing so does not contravene statutory obligations in respect of data storage. Likewise, data is deleted when it is no longer required to fulfil the purpose pursued by its storage, or if storing it is not permissible for other legal reasons.
How does Zalando check the creditworthiness of its customers?
In order to offer our customers the best possible options for their choice of payment method we must protect both them and us against misuse. To this end, when a customer places an order we transmit the personal data required to carry out a credit check - including the address information relating to our customers - to an external service provider which carries out a corresponding assessment based on mathematical/statistical procedures and calculates the probability of a payment default. The customer is informed that a credit check will be conducted at the time of registration and must expressly give their consent. We use this "probability score" for a weighted decision on payment options that are to be allowed.
What data is stored in the cookies?
The cookies used by Zalando do not store any personal data. When the cookie is activated it is assigned an identification number. At no time is this identification number linked to personal data. Based on the cookie technology we receive only pseudonymized information, for example which of our Shop's pages have been visited, which products were looked at, etc. The analyzed data is used solely for the purpose of improving our service.

Acceptance of cookies is not a prerequisite for visiting our websites. However, customers can only use the goods basket function and order products if they allow us to set cookies.

Zalando uses the services of some advertising partners who help to make our Internet presence and the webpages more interesting for our customers. For that reason, when visiting some webpages the cookies of partner companies are also stored on the user's hard drive. These are temporary/permanent cookies which are deleted automatically after a specified period of time.
Similarly, the cookies of our partner companies contain only pseudonymized information relating to usage behavior. They do not contain any personal data. In this respect, some of our advertising partners also record outgoing information via the webpages, e.g. which pages were visited beforehand, so that our customers can be shown the advertising most appropriate to their interests.
Does Zalando use re-targeting?
We use the method known as re-targeting in order to appeal - in the form of advertising on the website of our partners - to Internet users who have already expressed an interest in our shop and our products. We firmly believe that showing personalized advertising relating to users' interests is generally of more interest to Internet users than advertising that contains no personal references.
This advertising material shown on our partners' websites is based on cookies set previously and an analysis of usage patterns. This form of advertising is performed in a completely pseudonymized manner, and at no point is there any link to, or association with, personal data.
